#19 Ouro Preto – Brazilian Baroque [Belo Horizonte]
Ouro Preto (Black Gold) was founded at the end of the 17th century and is located in the mountains of the state of Minas Gerais, a city with cobbled streets in hilly terrain. The many churches, bridges, fountains and colonial buildings impress with their baroque architecture, which is partly due to the extraordinary talent of the baroque sculptor Aleijadinho. It is a journey into the complex history of colonial Brazil. Ouro Preto was the first Brazilian city to be declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1980.
