#17 The Pampulha Ensemble and the City’s Development [Belo Horizonte]
In the 1940s, Belo Horizonte took a bold step toward modernity. The city’s ambitious mayor, Juscelino Kubitschek, commissioned the rising architect Oscar Niemeyer to design a leisure complex around the newly created Pampulha Lake. The result was a visionary ensemble of architecture, landscape, and art that would become a cornerstone of Brazilian modernism.
The Pampulha Ensemble includes a church, a casino (now an art museum), a yacht club, and a ballroom, all designed in Niemeyer’s signature curves and concrete. The project also marked the beginning of a long-standing partnership between Kubitschek and Niemeyer, later culminating in the creation of Brasília, the new capital of the country.
