The Pantanal (Engl.: swamp) is the largest inland wetland on earth. As part of the Pantanal Conservation Complex, the species-rich wetland was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. The wetland is almost half the size of Germany and is mostly located in Brazil, minor parts in Bolivia and Paraguay. For up to six months of the year, the area is completely under water and serves as an important refuge for numerous animals and plants.
