Originally settled by various indigenous communities, the Portuguese arrived in the region of Paraty in the late 16th century. They settled in Paraty because the place offered a safe harbor for ships and was one of the most important starting points for explorations into the interior of the continent. After the discovery of gold in the neighboring state of Minas Gerais, the "Caminho do Ouro" gold route was established, which ended in Paraty. From there, the gold was shipped to Europe together with “Brasil” wood and agricultural products. The historic center of Paraty has preserved its 18th century urban structure and much of the colonial architecture to the present day.

Within a 15-30 minutes drive, there are numerous pristine sandy beaches that can explored. Some of them are great spots for surfers. The town of Cunha, which is an hour drive away, is number one for pottery crafts in Brazil and worth to visit.

The Ilha Grande Bay is home to an impressive diversity of animal species, some of which are threatened, such as the white-lipped peccary and several primate species, including the Southern Muriqui. The area boasts 125 species of anurans (frogs and toads), 27 of reptiles and 150 species of mammals.

Abrahão is the only settlement on Ilha Grande besides a number of remote resorts. The island is free of motorized traffic and can only be reached by boat. In recent years, it has become a popular destination for Brazilian and international tourists. The beach Lopes Mendes, on the south side of the island, is called to be one of the top ten beaches in the world.
