As the capital of Brazil from 1549 to 1763, Salvador de Bahia witnessed the blending of European, African and Amerindian cultures. Its historic centre, the Cidade Alta (Upper Town) and Pelourinho, a defensive, administrative and residential neighborhood perched atop a cliff, has many outstanding civil, religious and military colonial architecture dating from the 17th to the 19th centuries. 

There are many streets lined with brightly colored houses, often decorated with fine stucco-work, that are characteristic of the city. Echoes of this multicultural past survive to the present day in the historic centre’s rich tangible and intangible heritage. 

Morro de São Paulo is considered an insider tip for Brazilian tourism, for its beautiful beaches and hippie charm. The village has good tourist infrastructure with many guesthouses and restaurants. The island can be reached by ferry.
