Petropolis, also known as the Imperial City, was due to its pleasant mountain climate the summer residence of the Brazilian Emperors in the 19th century. It became the de facto capital of the Empire of Brazil during the summers. The town's name refers to Pedro II, the last Emperor of Brazil, who is entombed at the Cathedral of Petropolis.
